West Dunbartonshire : Articulate

VALE OF LEVEN

What is this?

Using the arts, especially drama and creative writing to infuse the literacy curriculum in the Vale of Leven Academy cluster, the Articulate project aimed to improve self esteem and to raise standards in reading and writing by extending the range and style of learning in a memorable and empowering way. In order to support this aim, the project featured:

  • A play-writer in residence team;
  • Actors/producer/directors for culmination events;
  • Drama touring provision and specialist visits.

The project was delivered in partnership with The Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, renowned for its investment in new writing for Scottish theatre and its education project called Class Act.

FLaT involvement?

FLaT support was provided to explore the impact of the arts methodology and practice on learning and teaching in different areas of the curriculum.

Project aims?

  • To encourage participants to write a short play with the help of a professional playwright.
  • To improve and enhance their work through script development workshops with the help of the Traverse Theatre Director and Professional Actors;.
  • To develop their own acting skill, performance and theatre arts skills;.
  • To understand the discipline of working in the arts and in the theatre; and .
  • To perform their own work to an audience of their peers and to an audience of family and friends in a professional theatrical setting.

Project outcomes?

  • Developed creative and imaginative writing skills amongst participating pupils;
  • Improved the ability of pupils to communicate effectively;
  • Raised levels of pupil self esteem and self worth;
  • Increased motivation to participate in, and enjoyment of learning; and
  • Created a positive impact on the thinking skills, problem solving and team-working of individuals, the school and community.

Timescale?

The project started in October 2003 and ran until January 2005.

Level of Support?

FLaT support was a grant of £43,000 plus evaluation costs.
