Gifting of the Alberta Online Encyclopedia – Albertasource.ca – to the University of Alberta

The Trustees and staff of the Heritage Community Foundation are delighted to announce that, effective June 1st, 2009,  the Foundation has gifted the Alberta Online Encyclopedia – Albertasource.ca – to the University of Alberta. This ensures that the Encyclopedia is maintained in perpetuity in service to Albertans, Canadians and all users of the World Wide Web. We are delighted that University Learning Services will make this amazing resource, which in 2008 received about 4 million site visits, available as part of their extensive print and digital library holdings.

The Encyclopedia comprises over 80 websites covering all aspects of Alberta’s historical, natural, cultural, scientific and technological heritage. The gift has been independently valued at over $43 million in intellectual property, and makes accessible not only purpose-built content but also digitized materials from Alberta museums, archives and other collections, both public and private.  The Foundation has truly accomplished its mandate of linking people with heritage through discovery and learning. We would like to thank our heritage partners, first and foremost, the Alberta Museums Association; funders; patrons; donors; and others who have made this achievement possible.

After 10 successful years of operations creating the largest, purpose-built, multimedia encyclopedia in Canada, the Foundation ceased operations as of June 30th.  We were the “small foundation that could” but Albertasource.ca became bigger than we could possibly have imagined. We are delighted that the University of Alberta with its academic and technical resources can grow it to the next generation of excellence. The contact at Learning Services is:
