Welcome to the Edmonton Oilers
Heritage Website! This website coincides with the
Edmonton Oilers' 25th Anniversary Celebration marking
their arrival in the National Hockey League (NHL) in the
1979-1980 season. This online information
resource was created by the Edmonton Oilers Community
Foundation, in partnership with the Heritage Community
Foundation, and commemorates the rich history and
contributions of the Edmonton Oilers.
The timing for this project could not
be better. Over the past 25 years, a wealth of
information has accumulated on the background, history,
achievements and contributions of the hockey club to
Edmonton, the province, and nation. This information—in
the form of newspaper clippings, images and audio and
visual materials—can be found with the Edmonton Oilers
Community Foundation, with the team and scattered
throughout the world in private collections of long-time
fans. The need for this website is clear; information on
the team, its legacy and contributions are now available
in one place.
Past
game programs, ticket stubs, newspaper clippings,
television and radio interviews, game footage and other
memorabilia provide a living history that many fans,
young and old, will be able to identify with. The
history of this home-grown club can be traced prior to 1979. Clubs that have contributed to the
Oilers legacy include the Edmonton Superior junior
teams, the Edmonton Flyers Senior teams, the Edmonton
Mercury touring amateur squads, and the Edmonton Oil
Kings.
Delve
into this website and you will be privy to documents,
interviews, footage and information on the Edmonton
Oilers Hockey Club that will bring the story of this
remarkable team to life. We encourage you to take your
time and explore the Edmonton Oilers Heritage website
and return often as the site will continue to grow and
expand with the club.
This website is divided into four
sections
History
explores hockey’s roots in Edmonton, from the early
years of the game in Alberta to the Oilers’ dynasty
years in which they won five Stanley cups. Precursor
events prior to the championships include the formation
of the World Hockey Association and the Oilers inclusion
to the NHL. Player memories and rebuilding of the hockey
club in the 1990’s are also featured in this section.
Legacy pays tribute to
the Edmonton Oilers for the many years of service to the
community and to the game of hockey. The team's contribution
to the city and province include hockey schools,
charities and community events. On the rink, Edmonton-born
players have represented their country in
international events, all-star games and the Olympics.
Memories is an interactive section where users may
explore the Awards of the NHL, tour Rexall Place and the
Edmonton Oilers front office, and test Oilers hockey
knowledge with an online quiz. The Record Breakers
subsection features player profiles according to
position.
