Player Profiles: Heroes and Pioneers
(1800s-1949)
The early hockey greats who either
hailed from or played in Alberta were a collection of
rogues, innovators and thrill-seekers.
For greats like Lester
Patrick,
Edmonton was a stopover on the way to bigger and better
things to come on the west coast. For Eddie
Shore,
Edmonton was the place to earn a reputation as the
hardest hitter in the game. For Sweeney
Schriner,
Alberta was an escape from a hostile life in his native
Russia. For Frank
Boucher, it was the Wild West, a place
to seek adventure and to play a little hockey on the
side.
Legends, all of them—and then some.
In this section, we look at some of the great heroes
from the early days of hockey in Alberta.
