The Oilers Legacy

Wayne GretzkyEdmonton's hockey legacy, as well as its future, can be found on frozen ponds and outdoor ice of neighborhood rinks. In community centers, where minor hockey thrives, kids of all ages dream of holding the Stanley cup like Gretzky, Messier, and Lowe did years ago. They call out names of current Oilers, who they've met through community events and special school visits, and try to touch upon their spirit. Kids mimic their idols and the Oilers know that in a city like Edmonton, where hockey is akin to religion, there is responsibility both on and off the ice.

JubilationThis section explores what hockey means to Edmonton. From the contributions made by players, coaches and management to the impact the team has made to the city. The legacy of the Oilers can be defined by its involvement with the community. On the ice, Edmonton players have gone on to the all-star game, played for our country on the international stage, and have reaped awards for their abilities. Off the ice, the Oilers players and personnel have brought hockey schools to the city, committed time and work to charities, and have raised awareness to social issues.

The legacy of the Edmonton Oilers is not found in just one event or charitable organization, but in youth, where hockey dreams and visions of favorite players reside.
