The Alberta Geneaological Society is a non-profit society, registered under the Societies Act in 1973, which carries out activities chiefly in the Province of Alberta. Its objects are

  • To promote the study of genealogy and research within the province of Alberta

  • To instruct members in the ethical principles, scientific methods and effective techniques of genealogical research

  • To assemble a reference library, publish genealogical related resource materials

  • To provide seminars, workshops, establish friendly relations with other genealogical, and related societies

  • To encourage the establishment of "Branches" of the Society under such terms and conditions as the Bylaws of the Society from time to time

Branches are located at: Brooks, Camrose, Drayton Valley, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Red Deer.

Genealogical Societies can provide a considerable amount of information about the available records and repositories in local areas, the province, country and worldwide. Genealogical Societies bring genealogists and family historians together who have a wide scope of past experiences and expertise in the field of genealogy to share with each other. One of the objects of any genealogical society to promote the study of genealogical research, to instruct members in the ethical principles, scientific methods and effective techniques of genealogical research.

Membership totals about 1000 including: individual and family memberships in Alberta, other Canadian provinces, USA, and other foreign countries; subscription and Canadian exchanges. The Society is governed by an elected executive: six officers, that, along with nine elected branch directors and fourteen appointed (by the elected officers and directors) standing committee chairpersons, make up the administration body of the executive committee that meet five times a year (January, March, June, September and November) in Edmonton. The Annual General Meeting is held in April at the Prince of Wales Armouries Heritage Centre, Edmonton. The Society's newsletter Relatively Speaking is published four times a year. The Society has one paid employee, an Office Coordinator. The total number of volunteer hours contributed by the membership for 1999 were approximately 26,292.25.

Membership in the Society will provide you with many services and opportunities in respect to your pursuit of genealogical and family history research

  • Membership in the provincial society and the right to join any of the associated branches

  • Voting privileges at the branch level and provincial AGS Annual General Meetings

  • The right to hold a position; elected or appointed in the branch and/or provincial executive committee

  • The AGS will initially provide you with a membership kit containing samples of Pedigree Charts and Family Group Sheets, an introductory information about the Alberta Genealogical Society

  • A subscription to the Society's quarterly journal "Relatively Speaking" a publication produced by volunteers from the contributions submitted by members and friends of the Society

  • Free of charge 'members queries' and the publication of new member's research interests, in "Relatively Speaking"

  • The AGS branches publish genealogical news journals that are exchanged with the other branches of the Society in the province. The branch newsletter is included with the membership

  • The AGS holds an annual genealogical conference featuring informative sessions conducted by skilled guest speakers that make possible for you to increase your knowledge and improve your research skills

  • Genealogy Beginner's Course, and genealogy-oriented programs are offered by the branches and opportunities to enroll in other educational AGS workshops and programs as they are offered to the members

  • The AGS maintains a lending library in its office location. You have the privilege of borrowing books and journals by mail upon a written request, or visit the library in person at no charge, and browse through the vast resources available to you

  • The AGS Library is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the second and fourth Wednesday evenings of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the third Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon

The Alberta Genealogical Society is an Associate member of the International Genealogical and Family History Societies. Regular publications include the quarterly periodical Relatively Speaking; Cemetery Publications - with information from many Alberta cemeteries; and Occasional Papers, dealing with topics such as "English Education Records in Genealogy" and Canadian themes as diverse as "Fur Trade Genealogy", as well as Huguenot and other ethnic migration.

The Society hosts a Conference each year, the next being April 17-18, 2004. The program includes genealogical sessions; commercial vendors with genealogical books, maps and other supplies and services ; and genealogical exhibits featuring AGS special interest groups.
