The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, with technical and administrative support from other branches in the Division, allocates lottery funds to communities to help them develop and care for their historical resources. Projects range from preserving historic buildings and restoring historic districts, to producing interpretive markers and publications, to educational projects.

Founded in 1976, the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation is a Crown agency, attached to the Ministry of Community Development. The mandate of the Foundation is to assist community heritage projects across the province. While Alberta Community Development offers these clients technical assistance in heritage preservation and awareness, the Foundation provides partial sponsorships from its Alberta Lotteries funding allocation.

The Foundation has helped preserve 200 community museums through the primary sponsorship of Museums Alberta. This network receives more than six million visitors annually. Similarly, funds are disbursed to provincial groups involved with archives, historical work, genealogical research, and archaeological interpretation, which collectively involve thousands of volunteers.

The Foundation directly operates the Alberta Main Street Program, which works in partnership with communities to restore early commercial streetscapes as a form of low-cost urban revitalization. The program helps to restore local character, boost local business and enhance tourism potential in 23 Alberta communities.
