Students study in Rutherford Library

They are everywhere, in every nook and cranny huddled over textbooks; gathered in classrooms and lecture halls listening intently to their professors and instructors; or participating in lively discussion amongst themselves over pints of beer at the Power Plant or Room at the Top (RATT). They are the students: the heart, soul and raison d’ être of the University of Alberta.

The students of the university were 45 strong when the institution first opened its doors in 1908. A century later, the university student population stands at over 36,000 individuals enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies, continuing education, or online and distance learning. Students are the pride of the University of Alberta, and the institution’s most persuasive ambassadors, many of whom have gone on to lasting fame in Alberta, Canada, and around the world.

Here then, are the stories of the students of the University of Alberta, from their curricular and extracurricular activities, to profiles of some of the institution’s more illustrious alumni. The students are the human face of university education, and living embodiments of the spirit of discovery and the pursuit of new knowledge.
