Academic Staff
For one hundred years, students at the University of Alberta have pursued academic excellence under the guidance and tutelage of the university’s academic staff. It should be mentioned here that the academic staff of the University of Alberta are more than those who hold the title of professor, assistant professor, or associate professor in their particular field of study. Administrative and professional officers such as deans, chairs, and directors; librarians; faculty service officers; and sessional and seasonal instructors and lecturers can all be included in the ranks of the university’s academic staff. All have a critical role to play in the administration of and development of the university’s academic programs and services, and in the teaching and mentorship of the university’s many students.
It is, of course, the discovery and dissemination of knowledge that garners the most attention at the university level, and the University of Alberta prides itself on its excellence in research and instruction. University of Alberta professors have won accolades not only for their ability to guide students in the quest for higher education, but also for their work in research, invention, and innovation. Many inventions that have emerged from Alberta and placed this province on the world stage of innovative thought and development have their origins in the lecture halls and laboratories of the university. This was the dream of the first president of the University of Alberta, Dr. Henry Marshall Tory: to build in Alberta a post-secondary institution whose academic staff excelled in research and education from day one.
