School of Public Health
University launches Canada’s first public health faculty
The School of Public Health encourages interdisciplinary research that focuses on health prevention and wellness. President Samarasekera called the creation of the School, the first of its kind in Canada, "historic". The Universities of Calgary and Lethbridge actively collaborate with the School of Public Health.

In March 2006, the Board of Governors approved the School of Public Health, making it the newest faculty of the University of Alberta. The School is also Canada's first stand-alone faculty dedicated to public health. The School of Public Health is comprised of the Centre for Health Promotion Studies, the Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research, and the Department of Public Health Sciences.
The Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research is a provincial organization that investigates prevention, emergency response, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and provides leadership, coordination, and support for injury-related programs, education, and research across Alberta. The Centre for Health Promotion Studies supports interdisciplinary, collaborative research and provides community service initiatives in health promotion. The Department of Public Health Sciences has been providing graduate education and research opportunities aimed at improving public health for over 50 years.
The School of Public Health is focused on promoting wellness, reducing risks, and preventing illness and injury in order to improve the overall health of Albertans and others. The researchers in the School of Public Health work with people from other University departments, other universities, regional health authorities, and government departments. The research in the School of Public Health is focused on the areas of biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, epidemiology, health policy and management, and health promotion and socio-behavioural health science.
Undergraduate programs are not offered by the School of Public Health; however, it does offer numerous graduate programs. Graduate programs lead to the following degrees:
- PhD in Public Health Sciences
- Master of Public Health (MPH)
- MSc in Health Promotion or Public Health Sciences
- Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Health Promotion
The School of Public Health is committed to increasing its community engagement and working with other groups to increase public health initiatives. The Pan-Alberta Public Health Coalition, which has representatives from the Universities of Alberta, Calgary, and Lethbridge, is only one example of the School of Public Health's collaborative efforts.
