Coal was "processed'' to produce a product that met specific customer needs. Coal coming from each underground mine was referred to as "run-of-mine" material. It contained unwanted rock and a wide variety of particle sizes. The "tipple" utilized a variety of methods and processes to remove rock and separate the coal
into specific, segregated sizes, thus addressing each customer's need. Coal was referred to as "cleaned" and "sorted" when it emerged from the tipple.
