Pi Beta Phi

Delta Delta Delta Fraternity House

Pi Beta Phi was founded April 28, 1867 at Montmouth College in Illinois. The oldest sorority on campus, the “Pi Phis”, as they are more commonly known, first came to the University of Alberta in 1931 when the ban on fraternal organizations was lifted. Initially, several women formed a local chapter (Alberta Upsilon) and formally petitioned chapter affiliation with Pi Beta Phi. Alberta Upsilon, the only women's fraternal organization, was aided by Delta Kappa Epsilon and Kappa Sigma. On September 22, 1931, the sixty-fourth chapter of Pi Beta Phi – Alberta Alpha – was officially installed by then Grand President Amy Burnham Ontken.

Dedicated to philanthropic and community service efforts that will remove the barrier of illiteracy, Pi Beta Phi is involved in such projects as "Arrow in the Arctic", which helps supply libraries in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and "Champions are Readers", which allows collegiate chapters and alumni clubs to work with local third-grade students to encourage healthy reading habits.
