The Alberta Women's Archives Association (AWAA) is a not-for-profit organization that works to preserve women's history in Alberta. AWAA is a volunteer group with a central, elected board to guide activities. We have been active in preserving women's history in Alberta for nearly 15 years.

AWAA focuses its efforts in two ways. First, AWAA helps individuals and organizations that have archival materials relating to women preserve those materials, and then donate them to an accredited archives. Volunteers from AWAA provide practical advice and assistance to help identify and organize these historical materials for donation. Secondly, AWAA works to educate the general public about the value of women's archival materials, and to over come the still-common notion that women's archival materials are not historical documents worthy of preservation.

Through presentations, participation in heritage activities, our newsletter, and other outreach activities, ASAA encourages women to save the records that document their lives. AWAA has just published Preserving Women's History: An Introductory Guide to Preserving the Records of Women's Lives. This fully illustrated manual by Patricia A. Myers shows why saving women's material is important, gives practical advice on methods of saving and storing those materials, outlines how archives work, and provides sources of further information and help. The manual is available from AWAA at our mailing address, or by contacting the current chair at the email address given. Copies are $15 CDN each, plus $5 CDN postage and handling. Bulk orders receive reduced mailing rates.

Membership

Membership is open to anyone with an interest in preserving women's history, and costs just $15 CDN a year.
