AgriCom

Boat and Sportsmen ShowSince 1972, Northlands Park’s growing needs had been pressing toward the construction of a major trade and agricultural centre. Previously upscale buildings like the historic Livestock Pavilion and Manufacturers Building were becoming outdated and needed to be replaced.

As an answer to concerns voiced by the providers of major commercial events, Northlands gave the go ahead to build the AgriCom, a complex that could fulfill the desire for modern facilities.

Home and Garden displaysConstructing such an expansive and multi-purpose building necessitated a strong commitment from project partners. The provincial government provided a $7,250,000 CDN grant and the federal government matched it.

The Chandler Kennedy Architectural Group drew up designs so that PCL Construction Limited, could set about their work, and finally, the $35 million CDN project became a tangible reality.

Like the Coliseum, the AgriCom was much larger than the buildings that preceded it, including a 450,000 square foot space divided into display and support space composed of four exhibit halls, break out rooms, a dining area, offices, and a few other amenities.

Named after its two envisioned sectors of activity, agriculture and commerce, the AgriCom came into existence in 1982. With a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by City of Edmonton mayor Lawrence Decore and other dignitaries, guests shared in the air of excitement around them.

The 1984 Great Trade Show and Cultural Exhibition of China became the official opening event for the building. A novel idea, the event had great success as it received international media coverage and drew curious crowds wanting to learn about and interact with various aspects of Chinese culture.

With its commercial facet of business and catering continuing to grow into the present, AgriCom facilities are put to full use throughout the year. Accordingly, the building now requires rejuvenation to carry it into its promising future of modern regional, national, and global events.
