Strathcona Collegiate Institute

Strathcona Collegiate Institute (now Old Scona) was spacious compared to Duggan Street School. Each professor had his own lecture room, and under the supervision of Eugene Archibald, the University’s first library had room to grow.

Meanwhile, plans for the University’s first onsite building—General Teaching Building —took place when, with much grandeur in 1909 (Founder’s Day), Rutherford and Tory officially broke ground.

A number of financial and political events transpired that postponed construction. Instead, it was decided that three residential halls would be built to house the students, faculty, and classrooms until the campus could be expanded.
