History In Alberta

Doors Open was brought to Alberta in 2003 by Adriana Davies, Executive Director and Editor-in-Chief of the Heritage Community Foundation, with the goal of increasing awareness of the province's architectural heritage and special places. By creating awareness, communities could create enthusiasm for heritage and contemporary architecture, appreciation of historical and culturally significant places and spaces.

Some of the first communities to participate were Banff, Crowsnest Pass, Calgary, Edmonton and Lamont. By 2008, Doors Open Alberta had been growing for five years and 2008 was a huge success with 21 participating communities.

Many communities connected Doors Open Alberta with already existing events in their community such as Canada Day Celebrations, Harvest Festivals, and Film Festivals. Doors open places and spaces become sites and venues for Poetry Readings, Book Readings, Gallery Walks, Strawberry Teas and much more!
