The Proposal

On December 18, 2006 it was announced by the federal government of Canada that Edmonton had been awarded the designation: Cultural Capital of Canada, 2007. The announcement included a formal visit to Edmonton's City Hall by federal officials, the Honorable Rona Ambrose, MP and Rahim Jaffer, MP to publicly present the federal award of $2 million. The City of Edmonton contributed a further $667,000 making the total budget for the Edmonton Cultural Capital Program $2,667,000.

The award was made in the premier category for populations 125,000 or more. Edmonton had submitted an attractive proposal, themed Building Connections, and overseen by the Edmonton Arts Council with a strong directive to apply coming from the City Manager's Office.
