Neighbourhood Groceries
 Once, nearly all neighbourhoods had little corner stores run by families or a couple of business partners. These businesses were more than places to pick up bread, milk, penny candy, trading cards or to return empty pop bottles-they were gathering points and provided a focus for people in the
neighbourhood. We found out through the Edmonton Journal that the neighbourhood grocery in Riverdale was going to close, so we went down to take photographs of it.
  One article we discovered talked about corner stores "as rustic or even pastoral; certainly, it is a beauty textured by memory." The article noted that each store had a "particular clutter and a particular tidiness." With more and more franchise operations and people more mobile in getting to larger stores, we see that these places are disappearing and it's not just the disappearance of a retail outlet. There's a culture around these places that people in a neighbourhood can find.
