Seed Words Project

Seed Words works with the immigrant learners of English as a Second Language and their families. Project participants write down their stories about seeds, planting and plants with the aim of developing their language and writing skills and documenting this aspect of their heritage for their children, families and community. This also preserves important agricultural knowledge. Working with their instructor, they edit and refine their stories and a final publication is anticipated.

Agriculture is a common link between people. Food and seeds are part of the cultural identity of people everywhere, whether it is memories of seeding, tending, gathering and eating or learning how to garden and grow plants in Alberta’s different climate and soils.

The project also links people in literacy learning with people of many different countries of origin.

This literacy and heritage learning project extends to the children of the ESL learners, connecting them with their family heritage as well as encouraging them to write and reflect on their families’ experience.

The project coordinator is Anne Marie Brose, a community educator who has fifteen years experience teaching ESL and doing community development work both in Edmonton and in refugee camps in Thailand.
