While studying at Queen's University, Mr. Wallace took a course in industrial archaeology. While historic homes often get lots of attention and are well studied, industrial and business sites are often overlooked. The course Mr. Wallace took was taught by a professor who brought the importance and excitement of the subject alive for students.
Because of this experience, Mr. Wallace decided to introduce students at Strathcona Comp to this subject and the Strathcona High School Industrial Archaeology and History Project was the result.
Our project began with a single question for our study and research: "What are the historically important industrial and commercial sites in Edmonton and area and what is their significance to the community?"
We selected sites that were of particular historical importance because of their architecture, uniqueness in function and importance to the surrounding community. Particular attention was given to sites slated for demolition or closure.
Twenty-nine students participated in the first year of the project. We met at noon to discuss what we were going to do, because this was a special project outside of our regular class schedule.
