The Klien government handed out $33 million in legacy grants for centennial projects Friday, including more than $8.5 million to greater Edmonton.

The grants were the third phase in the building program to commemorate the province’s 100 th birthday, which has seen $114 million given out.

“Albertans strongly indicated that they want to commemorate our centennial in meaningful ways and leave lasting legacies in their communities,” said Gene Zwozdesky, minister of Community Development.

“This was quite evident by the overwhelming response to our Centennial Legacies Grant program.”

St. Alberta received $2 million for its multi-purpose leisure centre, while Edmonton received $1.5 million for improvements to Louise McKinney Riverfront Park.

The Londonderry Fitness and Leisure Centre was given a grant of $500,000.

Other Edmonton projects that are receiving grants include: the Muttart Conservatory ($300,000), the traditional burial grounds and Fort Edmonton Cemetery commemoration ($300,000), Strathcona branch library ($275,000) and the Northgate Lions Senior Citizens Rec Centre ($250,000). Sherwood Park’s Center in the Park received $250,000.

Leduc’s Black Gold Centre received $1.7 million, as did multi-purpose field-house projects in Drayton Valley and Cold Lake. Athletic facilities in Fort McMurray and Athabasca each received $2 million.

Not all the funding went to bricks-and-mortar projects. The Edmonton-based Alberta On-Line Encyclopedia received $1 million.

Zwozdesky said the initial $16 million that had been set aside for the third phase had to be more than doubled to accommodate the higher-than expected number of requests and fast-rising construction and materials costs.
