Alberta's North

The North is one of those rare places that is relatively untouched and unspoiled, where a person can still experience solitude. The largest of the province's six tourism areas, the North encompasses a vast expanse of land stretching from just north of Edmonton all the way to the border with the Northwest Territories. The abundance of natural resources has spurred the development of many northern communities. Fort McMurray, for example, grew up around the site of the world's largest single oil sands deposit, a development that is chronicled at the Fort McMurray Oils Sands Interpretive Center. The challenges of living in the North in the late 19th century are depicted at Historic Dunvegan in Peace River Country. It recreates the site of one of Alberta's earliest fur trade posts and missionary centres. Explore the whole range of community museums that tell the story of the North's settlement and celebrate community life. After a busy weekend of touring historic sites and museums, youu'll appreciate the natural history on the white sand beaches at Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park.
