World War II

During the Second World War about 78,000 man and 4,500 women from Alberta enlisted in the services. During the Second World War many arrived in the Peace River country to work on the Alaska Highway, Northwest Staging Route, and the Canol pipeline. The arrival of the Sudeten Germans in the Peace River country in 1939 had a significant impact as well.

With the construction of a line of airfields for the Northwest Trading Route, and the Alaska Highway, the Peace River country became much more accessible after the war. The new accessibility allowed rapid economic development in the decades that followed.
