Literary Arts - Groups

While their craft is often a solitary activity, writers require aid in a variety of areas such as training, funding and marketing. The groups section focuses on assistance that is available to writers from the initial inception of an idea to the selling of the final draft. Far from being comprehensive, the section focuses on a few of the community resources available for those involved in the literary arts including training institutions and writers-in-residence programs, funding resources, prizes, publishers and book-sellers.

Training institutions offer many engaging and interesting programs that help to develop skills, increase knowledge and inspire students creatively. Award winning authors such as E.D. Blodgett have instructed literary arts students and inspired them to delve deeper into their areas of study while gaining valuable skills. The training institutions section looks at programs offered at institutions such as the University of Calgary, University of Alberta and Banff Centre. The grants, guilds and governments portion focuses on financial assistance and community support that is available for literary arts ventures. Within the prizes section, there are a variety of different prizes that provide financial support to encourage Alberta writers. The publisher's portion looks at a variety of Alberta publishers, some who focus on a particular market, while others publish a wide array of titles. A book-seller is the final step in book production, selling the final product and acting as a community meeting place.
