Coal coming from each underground mine was referred to as "run-of-mine" material. It contained unwanted rock and a wide variety of particle sizes. into specific, segregated sizes, thus addressing each customer's need. Coal was referred to as "cleaned" and "sorted" when it emerged from the tipple.
