Alberta Film Development Program

Film set in Bragg CreekThe Alberta Foundation for the Arts administers a fund devoted specifically to indigenous film makers. The Alberta Film Development Program was set up in 1998 through the Alberta Film office of Community Development. Its objective is to encourage the local film industry through grants and other opportunities, with a long-term strategy of retaining Alberta artists.

To obtain a grant from the program, the applicants must meet certain criteria; the majority of the company must be Alberta owned and its main enterprise must be film related. The money can go towards any sort of project including, television series, documentaries, feature films and experimental pieces. Sports programs, game shows, reality television, commercials and pornography are not eligible. The company must also show proof of a broadcast license or distribution agreement for their project.

The grant is based on 20 percent of the project's production costs, up to a maximum of $750,000.

While filming inside Alberta is encouraged, working outside the province is accepted as an occasional necessity.
