Training Institutions

Film and new media arts industries are constantly changing as new technology allows for different ways to create. Many of the training programs offer hands-on experience which give students a chance to actively participate in the field in which they wish to work. The following section will focus on Alberta's training institutions that offer programs focusing on different aspects of the film and new media arts industries.

Applied Degree in Motion Picture ArtsThe Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) runs a radio and television program offering students an opportunity to work directly with electronic media. In a hands-on environment, students run NAIT's radio station while taking turns writing, producing and hosting an entertainment show and weekly news package. Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) offers a New Media Production and Design Program that teaches techniques of audio and video production, software programming, animation, publishing and web design. The Red Deer College Motion Picture Arts Applied degree program allows students to apply their training to the television, motion picture, and multimedia industries. Many different techniques are covered in the program, ranging from traditional film to cutting edge digital production techniques.

Banff Centre for the ArtsLethbridge Community College has a Multimedia Productions program which is an intensive practical program allowing participants to blend graphics, animation, audio, video and text in order to create multimedia content. Such programs offer excellent experiences, as students are often actively learning through hands-on approaches. As individuals work on projects, they come to understand the skills and techniques that are required in order to work in their area of expertise.

While the film and new media industry is constantly evolving with the influx of new technology, Alberta training institutions work hard to deliver the latest in production techniques, new media skills and relevant information, in an attempt to support the new and burgeoning areas of artistic expression.
