The Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Programme

Markin Flanagan ProgrammeWriter-in-residence programs have been an integral part of the University of Calgary's literary community since the 1970s. Writers who participate in the program venture to Alberta, bringing with them fresh ideas and approaches that serve as inspiration to other writers.

Student at the UofCEstablished in 1993, the Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Programme encourages the sharing of knowledge in the area of the humanities and creative writing in particular. Two residences have been built for participants in the program. One houses an international writer, known as the ‘distinguished visiting writer', and the other houses a Canadian writer-in-residence. Although there are differences in the terms of the Canadian and international positions, some common activities include participating in readings, manuscript consultation and workshops.
