Greenwoods' Bookshoppe
In 2004, Edmonton's Greenwoods' Bookshoppe celebrated its 25th anniversary.
Greenwoods' began as a family owned and run operation when Gail,
Laurie and Brad Greenwood opened their first bookstore in 1979.
The first Greenwoods'
was located on Whyte Avenue. Now a bustling area in
Edmonton, during the 1970s, Whyte Avenue needed a face-lift. Organizations such as
the Old Strathcona Business Association and the Old Strathcona Foundation were intent on
providing the area with some help. Brad Greenwood, a board member with both
associations, helped to ensure that Greenwoods' played a part in the revitalization of
the historic Old Strathcona area.
Greenwoods' bookstore itself has been an important and
vital part of the Edmonton community for years, providing residents with quality books and
hosting a variety of literary events. Renowned authors such as Ann Rice, Gloria Steinem,
Jean Chretien, and Pierre Berton have conducted readings and discussions within the
bookstore over the years.
Over the years, Greenwoods' has expanded to encompass a broader selection of products.
In 1985, Greenwoods' Small World was established as a subsidiary specializing in children's
books.
In September of 2002, Greenwoods' Bookshoppe relocated to a different building, just a
few blocks south of Whyte Avenue.
