Enbridge PlayRites Festival

The Enbridge PlayRites Festival of New Canadian Plays is dedicated to developing and producing original theatre productions in Calgary. The festival, named after Enbridge Inc. (who became the title sponsor under a three-year agreement) was piloted in 1987, and stages four new plays a year in Alberta Theatre Projects' Martha Cohen Theatre. Designed to seat 480 people, rows of semi-circles allow all audience members an intimate view of the stage. The theatre is located in the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts, in downtown Calgary.

Enbridge Playrites FestivalSpanning six weeks in winter, the Enbridge PlayRites Festival debuts four new plays and hosts many other interesting events. Workshops, short skits, public readings, and panel discussions provide something of interest to a variety of people. Constantly evolving and changing, the festival often incorporates interesting attractions to help involve people by allowing them to observe performances and give feedback. "Platform Plays," an event offered at the 2004 festival features three full-length plays that are being considered for the following year's festival. Individuals may observe the plays over the course of three weekends and then offer feedback to enhance the development of the production. "Brief New Works" is an event which offers the chance to watch brief 10 minute plays performed by actors appearing in the festival and written by Canadians. Theatre critics can gather together for "Koffee Klatsch," an informal panel discussion punctuated by delectable snacks.
