The Cultural Inventory and construction of the Creative Edmonton Website, is a legacy project of the Edmonton Cultural Capital Program. Edmonton was awarded the designation of Cultural Capital of Canada for 2007.

Edmonton was awarded this designation because of the city's rich tradition of excellence in arts, heritage and culture. The designation enabled the creation of six major celebratory projects that included a new generation of cultural research and artistic programming designed to showcase Edmonton's unique cultural identity. The projects were made possible by funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage and the City of Edmonton.

  • Cultural Inventory - The City of Edmonton Cultural Inventory identifies cultural indicators for the City and undertakes benchmarking. It is a barometer of cultural activity and demonstrates that Edmonton is a creative city with strong arts, heritage and cultural products that contribute to the City's identity and the enjoyment of its citizens. The Inventory was undertaken by the Heritage Community Foundation.

  • Cultural Plan - The Cultural Planning Committee, established by the Edmonton Arts Council, created the City of Edmonton Cultural Plan. It recommends policies and initiatives that will build capacity in the sector at both the individual and community level.

  • Cultural Surveys – The Individual and organizational surveys provide both hard and soft data from the perspective on cultural creators and programmers.

  • Reference Map - The organizational directory has enabled the correlation between City wards and the presence of cultural organizations. This work is very important with respect to arts and heritage revitalization projects.

  • Organizational Directory - The Directory allows the user to conduct a number of searches including discipline, location, and other variables and includes both non-profit and for-profit organizations.

All of this information gives Edmonton the range of tools necessary to create a blueprint for cultural development. The Cultural Inventory will become an integral part of present and future cultural planning for the City of Edmonton and will serve to bridge the past, present and future. It will be the keystone in an integrated cultural management system embracing the public and private sectors, and involving stakeholders and the citizenry of Edmonton.
