Background Information for Teachers

Welcome to the Teacher Zone for the elementary portion of the Aboriginal Youth Identity - Leadership Edukit. The lessons in the elementary section are designed to compliment the 2005 Social Studies as outlined by Alberta Education. The focus on this series of lesson plans is on identifying Abori ginal role models and heroes such as Bill Reid, Buffy Sainte-Marie, or Waneek Horn. The lesson plans also allow students to discover how leadership roles operated within Aboriginal communities and how they dealt with conflict resolution. There is also a focus on Iroquois culture and history.

The information available to teachers is shown in the "Quicklinks" on this page. The information includes an article on the Iroquois Confederacy and its organization through female line of genealogy. The second article has a perspective on the culture and history of the Metis of Canada, and the final selection has some background on the Talking Circle and selection of leadership in Aboriginal groups by consensus.

The "Quiz key" link provides answers to the quiz found in the Student Zone.
