The Big League (1979-1983)
As the disco years of the 1970s
transformed into the 1980s, the Oilers had moved away
from the defunct World Hockey Association and was now part of a
new 21-team National Hockey
League (NHL).
Once
the team arrived in the NHL, the Oilers showed—thanks to
a previously-unimagined collection of talent—that it was
not going to follow the status quo. Playing a
run-and-gun style that challenged all conventional
attitudes about the game, the Oilers reinvented hockey.
The team lacked experience to win the Cup, but the
rookie franchise still had many exciting memories from
those first few NHL years. In this section, we look at
the difficulties of the Edmonton Oilers' first four
years in the NHL.
