The Expansion of the Second World War

Hangar at Royal Air ForceThe Second World War (1939 to 1945) was a time of expansion and growth in Alberta, as the province hosted many facilities involved in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The province also benefited from the building of the Alaska Highway and the Northwest Staging Route, which included a series of airfields used to provide American built military aircraft to the Russians.

Station buildings at Royal Air ForceAirfields, hangers, and military bases became widely visible in Alberta with the rapid development during the Second World War. These images of hangers and military building are examples of much of the building during the war.

The Birds Grocery StoreCommercial buildings constructed during the war years continued to reflect the stucco style called the moderne that was established in the 1930s. These buildings had rounded corners and a flat roof that was in keeping with the streamlined designs of ocean liners, aircraft, and trains.
