The Industry

Transition of Edmonton

The real estate industry in Alberta has played a vital role in shaping communities and contributing to the province's economic development. The history of real estate in Alberta chronicles the social, political, demographic, and architectural heritage of cities, towns and rural communities across the province. Collectively and individually, real estate professionals have made and continue to make significant contributions to the fabric of the province that deserve to be made known.

  • Alberta's Real Estate History is an account of Alberta's history, with a particular emphasis on real estate development, particularly within Edmonton and Calgary, and several smaller urban centres. The historical account begins in the 1800s well before Alberta's inception as a province, through to the first real estate boom in 1900s, onward to the oil discoveries that lent prosperity to the real estate industry in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The last section focuses on contemporary themes and developments.

  • The Profession describes the roles of real estate professionals within their industry.

  • Organizations section is an account of organized real estate in Alberta and in Canada, telling the story of the REALTORS® Association of Edmonton, the Calgary Real Estate Board, the Alberta Real Estate Association and Foundation, the Real Estate Council of Alberta, and the Canadian Real Estate Association. Primary content for the REALTORS® Association of Edmonton section is taken from John Gilpin's Responsible Enterprise.

  • Issues discusses the current state of Alberta's real estate industry and the various challenges faced by industry professionals such as urban sprawl, affordable housing, building codes and environmentalism.
