SAIT
When the
Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (PITA) opened
in 1916 with five students and seven instructors, no one
knew it would turn into one of the leading centres of
technical education with over 65,000 students that is
the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT)
today. Before PITA became SAIT, it had many varying
roles: a hospital during the major influenza epidemic of
1918; a Royal Canadian Air Force training school during
the Second World War. The Institute experienced rapid
growth after the War with the boom economy, and
officially became known as SAIT in 1965.
SAIT’s philosophy hasn’t changed since its founding
days: to offer courses that “meet the practical needs of
both employers and students.” Highly integrated with
business and industry, SAIT has recently opened 11
world-class Centres of Technology Development in a
variety of fields, from aviation to environmental
technology. Each Centre is tailored to meet the training
and service needs of a specific field, and is constantly
upgraded to meet the most cutting-edge technologies.
