Research
Research is the foundation for
inventions that improve our daily lives and help to
strengthen the economy. Research involves the close
scientific or scholarly investigation that needs to
happen before an invention is developed, and may range
anywhere from performing chemical experiments in a lab,
to test-driving vehicles through muskeg.
Within the broad definition of
research, there are two distinctions: pure and applied.
Pure research is for the sake of curiosity and functions
to advance knowledge for its own sake. This type of
research is typically carried out in government-funded
projects by University research facilities or specific
government laboratories.
Applied research is for the sake of
technological advancements, and is commonly performed in
private-sector research establishments. The goal of
applied research is to achieve results that will lead to
the development of commercially viable goods or
processes.
There is a relationship between these
two types of research: pure research generates new and
innovative ideas and applied research utilizes these
ideas to develop new inventions.
Specific
agencies devoted to research have supported innovation
and invention throughout Alberta by providing the
resources that are necessary to further study. Alberta
has a wide range of world class research establishments,
ranging from
academic centers to
government-funded
operations to
private organizations. Research
establishments are integral to Alberta’s well-being and
future prosperity.
Research and development has been
recognized as a major factor for the rapid economic
growth of the 20th century. Not only does research
benefit you and me, but it is also an important part of
a prosperous economy.
