Society and Culture
The society and culture of Alberta is
one that rises from Alberta's mixture of diverse
population, rich history, and unique geography. Alberta
has a rich culture with many languages and artistic
traditions.
Alberta's First Nations people are at
the foundation of the province's history, art, and
culture. As time has passed, Alberta has become the home
for people from around the world, all bringing their own
experiences, languages, and cultural traditions. The
First Nations people have very long traditions and
history that has enriched the culture of Alberta. With
the coming of the Fur Trade a new Aboriginal People, the
Métis, the children of traders and First
Nations people, created a unique and rich culture.
With the end of the Fur Trade and the
arrival of the settlers Alberta became host to people
from around the world, each bringing their own culture
and language.
Alberta people have played an
important role in defining what is Canadian socially,
culturally, and politically. The movement to give women
the vote had its roots in the province with some of the
founding members of the Famous Five hailing from
Alberta.
Albertan politicians, writers,
volunteers, pioneers, artists, musicians, sports
figures, and inventors have had a significant impact on
Canada.
Alberta's culture has been reflected
in its institutions. Museums, archives, and historic
sites can be found throughout the province, and are
interactive ways to experience and celebrate the
heritage of Alberta.
