Conclusion
In terms of loss of life, on the Allied side over 1600 men
died in just eight days. Looking at those statistics, it is easy to
understand why Ortona was called a "Little Stalingrad."
Despite the huge loss of life, it was a proud time for the
Loyal Edmonton Regiment. They had fought an entirely new type of battle
from that of any other Canadian unit (with the exception of their partners
at Ortona, the Seaforths).
They had also defeated an enemy whose skill and endurance
was legendary. Man for man, section by section, platoon by platoon,
company by company, they had mastered the paratroopers.
This battle is not well known among Canadians or among the
world, but the residents of Ortona remember what the Canadians did for
them, and they will always remember.
