Welcome to Alberta's Natural Resources

The Foothills Model Forest

Spring BoardingÑUsed For Cutting Down Trees, c.1910.The Foothills Model Forest is one of only eleven Model Forests across Canada that make up the Model Forest Network. The Network is funded and administered by the Department of Natural Resources Canada. The Model Forest covers an area of approximately 2.75 million hectares. The area itself lies within the boreal, montane, and sub-alpine forest regions of Canada and is centred in the town of Hinton, Alberta.

The Model Forest is an area that reflects a variety of cultural and ecological values, such as wildlife, biodiversity, watersheds, recreation and fisheries, as well as the traditional economic value of wood supply and, in the case of the Foothills Model Forest, a wealth of other natural resource values, including oil and gas, coal and the spin-off of tourism.

Research projects and programs carried out by the Model Forest, in collaboration with its sponsors and partners, are intended to demonstrate a shared commitment to the idea of sustainable forest management and to act as models for others to use as Alberta work towards sustainable development. The Model Forest sometimes offers tours of the forest, led by expert guides.
