Naming Alberta Regions

The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) over the Athabasca River near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Courtesy of the Alberta Geographical Names Program, the Heritage Community Foundation is proud to feature four detailed accounts of the history of place-naming in Alberta, organized according to region. The articles have been adapted from the four-volume Place Names of Alberta publication series, and the regions addressed in the documents are Mountains, Mountain Parks and Foothills, as well as Southern, Central, and Northern Alberta. The articles are authored by established place-name scholars and historians, and provide an excellent introductory resource for contextualizing Alberta's place names in a socio-cultural framework particular to the given region.

Aphrodite Karamitsanis wrote the texts for the first two volumes, while Tracey Harrison and Merrily K. Aubrey wrote the third and fourth volumes, respectively.
