Polling Place Officials

Polling Place Officials are an important part of the election process.  It is their job to give electors the information they need in order to vote properly so their ballot is not spoiled.  They also ensure that everybody who votes is a qualified voter.  Polling Place Officials also take part in counting the ballots for their poll and helping to determine whether or not a particular ballot has been spoiled.

So it must be difficult to be a Polling Place Official, right? Wrong!  Every election, volunteers from across the community are properly trained and assume the rolls of the Polling Place Official!

Only the following people are ineligible to act as deputy returning officers, supervisory deputy returning officers, or poll clerks:

  • persons who are not electors;

  • persons appointed or acting as Returning Officers; under the Canada Elections Act;

  • Members of the Parliament of Canada;

  • Members of the Legislative Assembly;

  • candidates and official agents;

  • judges of federal or provincial courts; or

  • persons who have within the immediately preceding 10 years been convicted of an indictable offence where the penalty that may be imposed for that offence is greater than 2 years' imprisonment.

For full details of rules and regulations, check out the Elections Act from the Queen's Printer Bookstore , or visit the Elections Alberta homepage !
