Alberta Geographical Place Names
Database Search

The Heritage Community Foundation and the Friends of Geographical Names of Alberta are pleased to make this dynamic searchable database available. The database allows you to search the following volumes:

  • Concise Place Names of Alberta, edited by Merrily K. Aubrey (Calgary, AB: University of Calgary Press, 2006)
  • Place Names of Alberta
    • Mountains, Mountain Parks, and Foothills (Volume I), edited by Aphrodite Karamitsanis (Calgary, AB: University of Calgary Press, 1991)
    • Southern Alberta (Volume II), edited by Aphrodite Karamitsanis (Calgary, AB: University of Calgary Press, 1992)
    • Central Alberta (Volume III), edited by Tracey Harrison (Calgary, AB: University of Calgary Press, 1994)
    • Northern Alberta (Volume IV), edited by Merrily K. Aubrey (Calgary, AB: University of Calgary Press, 1996)

In addition to place name searches within these volumes, you can also undertake searches on a range of categories as follows: Communities, Former Places, Geographical Features, Parks, Regions and Waterways. All have subcategories allowing advanced searches.

The database currently allows for keyword searches. However, this website is in the process of being archived, and the keyword search will not work in the archived copy.
