[View]

Clip Synopsis:

The Heritage Community Foundation, with the kind permission of Terry Garvin, is pleased to present this feature excerpt from the Bush Land People video.

The forest provides for the people who dwell in it. Various trees and shrubs in the forest offer food, medicine, and even art supplies to those who know how to harvest them.

Clip Transcription:

Wild berries and rosehips are gathered, eaten fresh, or preserved. Leaves from mint and the Labrador plant are used for herbal teas. Sweetgrass is used for purification and spiritual ceremonies, and is woven into crafts.

Traditional healers use plants for medicine. Poplar and balsam sap is combined with pine needles and heated into a poultice which draws infection out of wounds. The bitterroot wrap provides effective relief from sore throats and cold symptoms. Dried moss is used as an insulator to line diapers, and in personal hygiene.
