New Era Nutrition: Health

Nutraceutical Bars

The banner on the home page of the New Era Nutrition website reads almost like a science fiction movie poster. It says: "The Foods of Tomorrow … Today." Saul Katz, an Edmonton entrepreneur, started the company in 1992 with the future in mind. He teamed up with scientists and nutritionists from the University of Alberta Hospital in order to invent the company’s first product – a nutrition bar similar to the well-known Power Bars sold in the United States.

The Balance Bar (as it was first branded) combined nutritional ingredients and beneficial pharmaceutical ingredients (“nutraceuticals”), and the company fine-tuned the product with the National Research Council and the Leduc Food Processing Centre.

Since 1992, New Era Nutrition has developed "medicine that actually tasted good."  Its product line-up includes soy bars and protein mixes common to the industry, but also the Balance Bar Outdoor Line (an all-natural meal replacement bar), the Children’s FruitSponge (an apple-based fruit bar available in six flavours and an equal number of vibrant colours), and the Prebiotic Bar designed to promote good digestive health.

In April of 2005, New Era Nutrition started a new line of ‘slow carb,’ designed to be digested slowly by the body, preventing a quick spike and then crash of the body’s blood sugar levels. They call it the Solo GL Bar. This new bar has been successful enough to gain the company entry into the United States markets, which is popular and profitable for nutraceutical business.
