Aerodrome - An airfield or airport.

Ailerons - Controlled flaps on the wings that improve stability.

Air Observer School (AOS) - An Air Observer School was where navigators received the bulk of their training. Air bombers also attended AOS, but for a shorter period.

Axis - Composed principally of Germany, Italy and Japan, the Axis fought against the Allies during World War II.

Bank - A flight maneuver where the aircraft tips to the side.

Biplane - An airplane with two sets of wings.

Bombing and Gunnery School - A school that existed in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan to train men to become air bombers or air gunners, it included air firing practice.

Bush Pilot - A pilot who flies in remote regions.

Bush Plane - An airplane serving remote regions.

Civilian - A person who is not employed by the military.

Dead man - A lead weight used in a pulley.

Deregulation - The reduction or removal of government controls on an industry.

Elementary Flying Training School - A school designed for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan to give future pilots rudimentary flying training.

Floatplane - A seaplane with one or more pontoons for landing or taking off from water.

Fuselage - The main body of an airplane.

Gyro - A device that senses and resists rotation of the airplane along an axis.

Hangar - A building to house aircraft.

Jet Engine - An engine that uses a jet of gases to propel an aircraft through the air.

Lend-Lease Program - Set up by the United States to help various countries defend themselves from Axis invasions during World War II, it provided the Russians with transport aircraft, bombers, and fighter planes, which were flown to Alaska by American pilots.

Missile - A weapon that can be thrown or projected.

Monoplane - An airplane with one set of wings.

Northwest Staging Route - A series of landing fields and facilities for aircraft constructed between Edmonton and Fairbanks, Alaska as part of the Lend-Lease program.

Pontoons - A buoyant device that supports a floatplane above water.

Spar - A beam placed in a wing to increase its strength.

Tail Dragger - A plane with a single tail wheel and two main wheels.

Taxiway - A hard surface leading from the hangar to the runway.
