  Four Jet Engines
Douglas DC-8The defining characteristic of the DC-8 was its use of four jet engines. Large piston-engines were used on the earlier DC aircraft.

The new jet airliner was developed with four Pratt & Whitney JT3C turbojet engines. Douglas received orders in 1955 from airlines around the world.

The first DC-8s were made in 1959. A year later, eight DC-8s were produced per month. The aircraft continued to be improved, and after 12 years of production, 556 DC-8s were produced.
