Closed Cockpit

Grant McConachie’s Fokker Universal The Fokker Universal, like other bush aircraft of the time, was designed with a closed cockpit and cabin. It was necessary for any pilot flying into the north encountering the rugged conditions of the bush to have a closed cabin.

Another requirement was a heated cabin, which was made possible from pipes connected to air vents that ran along the exhaust pipe of the engine for warmth.

These advancements ensured that the pilot, passengers and freight could remain warm and protected.
