Provincial Policy in Energy

Energy

Alberta Energy Research Institute, University of Alberta

Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) resulted from a collaboration between the Government of Alberta, through AOSTRA, and industry partners. The technology allows bitumen to be recovered from oilsands deposits. The Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI) was established in 2000 and coordinates energy-related research in the province. AERI is involved in research, technology evaluation, and technology transfer in oil, gas, coal, electricity, renewable and alternative energy sources. AERI is an advisory committee that provides advice to the minister of Innovation and Science and the Alberta Government on research policy. The institute acts as the policy makers for the province in all matters dealing with energy.

Thickened Tailings Field Trial (Paste Technology). Designed to advance the oilsands industry.Research is necessary to utilize the remaining oil and gas deposits in Alberta as well as reduce the impact of greenhouse gases and other emissions. AERI has developed a research strategy for the next 20 years in an attempt to integrate separate sectors of the energy industry into a more unified and cooperative entity. The emphasis is on improving technology and efficiency while maintaining high environmental standards. AERI has several research priorities, including

  • Development of clean burning coal for generating electricity
  • Upgrading oilsand technology to enhance the value from bitumen and synthetic oil production
  • Managing carbon dioxide and other emissions
  • Improvement of oil and gas production
  • Developing an energy research infrastructure to support the emerging fuel cell and hydrogen-based fuel economies
