The Tobacco Pipe

In November 1945, inventor Jacob Bell Barron designed a tobacco pipe patented by the Canadian Patent Office. The ingenious feature to Barron's new pipe was a small disc, made from metal and filled with many small holes, to be inserted into the pipe’spatent record for this invention bowl. The disc was held snugly in place by a collapsible hinge that expanded to the edges of the pipe. This disc itself could be inserted into pipes of various sizes due to its collapsibility and expansion. The purpose of this disc was to maintain the tobacco above the bowl’s opening and allow for a clear passage of smoke to the mouthpiece. The smoke was drawn through the small holes in the disc to prevent tobacco from clogging the air passage.
